The newly branded, farm to table buffet restaurant, at the Isle Casino in Boonville, Missouri opens to the public this Friday. Year of the Dragon

Gong Xi Fa Ca! “wishing you prosperity” in Mandarin. The first day of the Chinese New Year – began at midnight today, January 23, 2012 – is the most important of Chinese holidays, celebrated by billions in China, and by millions of ethnic Chinese around the world. It’s a celebration that lasts for 15 days, culminating with the Lantern Festival.

The Dragon is anything but a formidable foe in Chinese culture. Unlike the demon that gets slayed in Western literature, the Dragon is a symbol of good fortune and intense power in Eastern culture. In Chinese tradition, the Dragon is regarded as a divine beast.

According to Sung dynasty manuscripts, the Dragon is described as having the “head of an ox or donkey, eyes of a shrimp, horns of a deer, body of a serpent covered with fish scales, and a feet of a phoenix,” and it usually clutches a pearl, meant to symbolize its supernatural powers.

The Dragon is larger than life and its appearance means that big things are to come. The Year of the Dragon is a flowing river, not a stagnant lake, so things happen quickly earlier in the year. The Dragon marks progression, perseverance and auspiciousness. It may also bring about unpredictable events.

WUMCRC recently had the opportunity to sit down with the talented designers and fabricators of the Grove entry marker.

Heather Testa and Matt McInerney of St. Louis’ own Ten 8, who designed the marker had plenty to share on their experience with this historic project…

What was your inspiration for the sign?

“We took graphics that were existing in the area that the Grove was using for banners and combined it with more retro, neon signs from neighborhoods from the past.”….Matt McInerney
